Elections

Who won in each electorate, and how close it was, from Elections ACT results. See your current MLAs.

The next election: 2028

Due on Saturday 21 October 2028. ACT elections are held every four years on the third Saturday in October, as set by the Electoral Act.

  • Voting is compulsory if you’re enrolled, and you can enrol from 18. Check you’re enrolled at your current address with the Australian Electoral Commission, which keeps the roll for the ACT.
  • Public Matter doesn’t list 2028 candidates yet. Elections ACT publishes the official list once nominations close, a few weeks before polling day.
  • Electorate boundaries are reviewed during each Assembly term and can change before an election. Elections ACT announces any changes.

Official information: Elections ACT.

How your vote is counted

The ACT uses a system called Hare-Clark. Each of the five electorates elects five MLAs, so the Assembly has 25.

  1. You number the candidates in order of your choice. The ballot asks you to number at least five. You can vote across parties and independents.
  2. Candidates are printed in a different order on different ballots (called Robson Rotation), so no one gains from being first on the list.
  3. A candidate is elected when they reach a quota: just over one sixth of the formal votes in the electorate (in 2024, 9,708 votes in Brindabella).
  4. Votes they don’t need move on. An elected candidate’s extra votes pass to each voter’s next choice, at a reduced value. Then the candidate with the fewest votes is excluded and their votes pass on too. This repeats until five people are elected.
  5. If an MLA leaves mid-term, there is no by-election. Their votes from the last election are counted again among candidates who stood and want the seat (a “count-back”).

Each electorate page below shows the count step by step: who reached a quota, who was excluded, and where their votes went.
